TMA Holds Party in McAllen

By The Border Tejano - Martin Leal

Saturday night (Dec. 4) at the O.K. Corral in McAllen, Texas, was the place to be as the Tejano Music Awards held its latest round of parties in the Valley; the parties are leading up to the main event in San Antonio on March 11, 2000. Several hundred fans were on hand to hear some of Tejano music’s up and coming bands and one of the Greatest Tejano Legends LITTLE JOE Y LA FAMILIA. The Event was co-sponsored by local valley radio station KIWW Puro Tejano 96.1. Many of the DJs were there to MC and meet with the fans. Station director Mico Rodriguez was very happy with the turn out. Bobby Masias and Lilly Lopez of the stations morning zoo show were also there to mingle with the fans. Other DJs there were Eloy Lozano, Joe Morales, Fernando Hernandez, JJ Montana and Javier De Anda.

Bands at the party were Grupos Traviso, Peligro, Briante, La Costrumbre, Los Quatezz, Ruth, Maritza, Laura Linda and Heather De Anda. Heather just recently signed with Capital EMI, so keep an ear out for her CD. Yes, the Ladies were out in full force and on stage. Some of these bands will rise to Tejano stardom and others will not. I’ll let you decide who will not, but I’ll give you my pick of the group that will go up. My Pick is Los Quatezz , Twin brothers from Mission Texas who currently record on their own label. (I’ll have more details later on in a feature story). This was also the night where the bands were comfortable mingling with the fans in the crowd and signing autographs.

I got a few, as well as a few demos.

The Nights main event was LITTLE JOE Y LA FAMILIA; the fans went wild as La Familia played their golden oldies. I don’t know what it is, but Little Joe has that certain something that makes you want to dance and sing along. Many Fans in the audience could be seen raising their drinks and cheering the band on. That is, if they weren’t dancing. The Party was a BLAST…
