[Tejanamom] and they are $75
[Tejanamom] !!
[mreporter]

[mreporter]

[Greg_Tx] why margarita and not texas latino in the book?
[Tejanamom] they said July 10 on the news tonight
[Tejano] well, i heard about Encuentro, what was it about? many here may have not heard about this meeting in the rio grande valley
[Tejanamom] I'm in Dallas btw
[V] Ramiro, do you have a personal website?
[mreporter]
it covered a lot of issues...
[mreporter]
mostly cultural between the residents of Mexico and the US, regarding...
[mreporter]
race, identity and music, simililarities and

[V] is there a place on the web where you archive your writings?
[mreporter]
differences,....politics too.
[mreporter]
but let's get down to business tonight....MAZZ-wise.
[mreporter]
this is what I picked up this week...on Maz....
[mreporter]
now keep in mind this is officials speaking on condition...
[mreporter]
of keeping their names out...
[mreporter]
MAZZ TALES Mazz, the fabled Tex Mex outfit has broken up but neither of the two leaders, Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez, who have each gone their own way, can go to any other label until they fulfill their contractual obligations to EMI, according to.
[mreporter]
On the name of Mazz,....reportedly Joe Lopez is the guy to keep it, but observers say it hardly matters, neither party is in position to dominate the market

[Greg_Tx] ?
[mreporter]
but..
[mreporter]
MAZZ TALES Mazz, the fabled Tex Mex outfit has broken up but neither of the two leaders, Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez, who have each gone their own way, can go to any other label until they fulfill their contractual obligations to EMI, according to.
[mreporter]
any comments?
[mreporter]
who should keep the name?

[teachrose] joe lopez
[Greg_Tx] Will there be a reunion?
[mreporter]
always a possibility,..
[mreporter]
and I have spoken with bothmen..

[Greg_Tx] is it a gimmick to make more money on a reunion tour
[mreporter]
i believe it is likea marriage....20 yrs on, they got tired..

[V] whoever remains with EMI should keep the name, or maintains the majority of the original group
[mreporter]
it is no gimmick...although Maz has certaoinly done their share of tricks inthe years past.

[teachrose] who originated mazz
[mreporter]
Lopez and Gonzalez,...as hardcore fans know...started...
[mreporter]
20 yrs ago, and their share something together...do you know what it is?
[mreporter]
anytakers?

[Tejanamom] a wife?
[Greg_Tx] were mazz and la mafia enemies at one time?
[mreporter]
sorry...next
[Tejanamom] a dog?

[mreporter]
INTOCABLE RETURNS IN FULL FORCE Intocable is still viable..their return after 5 months off should send their first single to No. 1 or thereabouts this coming week............On the underside, EMI is facing three lawsuits from the families of the dead members killed in the Jan 31 traffic accident. Also, families of the two injured members are also reportedly suing EMI
[Tejanamom] hi RayRay
[mreporter]
mazz was not inspired by anyone

[V] what do they expect to get from this lawsuit?
[raul] hello from dallas
[Tejano] what is the basis for the lawsuit against EMI?
[V] is it a personal injury type suit?
[mreporter]
yes PI suit....they blame EMI for the trip to Mexico....
[mreporter]
strange no?

[teachrose] part of the job to travel
[mreporter]
according to sources,......though...
[mreporter]
yes it is part of job...however,..the manner and the form of travel...
[mreporter]
is questionable....
[mreporter]
why drive, not fly?

[Tejanamom] oic
[mreporter]
if this is a supergroup....why not pay the extra$
[mreporter]
or is it the band's call on that?

[V] the risk U take, although I feel for the families loss
[mreporter]

[Greg_Tx] lol
[RayRay] lol
[Greg_Tx] people from out of state were complaining the most
[mreporter]
again....TMA blues?

[V] seems like most Tejano shows, including TTMA, TEMA and this showcase suffer from mediocrity in production
[mreporter]
well...I will tell you guys something.....

[WebJefe] no, ppl from Tx are complaining the most
[raul] Any Hometown boy fans out there
[Greg_Tx] lol
[V] U used to heavily criticize these shows for that, why have U backed off?

[Greg_Tx] TTMA is going down
[FastEddie] ttma???
[Greg_Tx] financially?
[V] why TTMA did what?
[RayRay] on why ...........????
[Luis] Will the new Latino Grammy replace TTMA?
[teachrose] define ttma
[mreporter]
TTMA stand sfor
[mreporter]
Texas Talent Musician Asso
[mreporter]
Latino Grammys will NOT replace TMA

[teachrose] thanks
[FastEddie] just stsrted reading would like to see what you guys are talking about
[Luis] Why Not
[Luis] To latino
[mreporter]
Gramys represent 40 categories, from music of Colombia,...
[mreporter]
Venezuela...Cuba, Brazil,....Spain,....
[mreporter]
Peru,......Argentina....

[Greg_Tx] and the estefan mafia
[raul] I personnely do think will be good......
[Luis] we are latinos right
[raul] grammys
[mreporter]
the estefan mafia...sounds like a group...
[Greg_Tx] lol
[Greg_Tx] from miami
[mreporter]
we are latinos....
[Luis] TTMA is to regional
[FastEddie] tejanos first q/vo
[Greg_Tx] yup i agree
[teachrose] i thought we were tejanos
[Luis] as you have stated before
[Greg_Tx] Spurs fan first!
[mreporter]
yes it is....but it needs it own category.

[V] there is much discussion in the journal about who we are, tejanos? latinos? mexicanos? How would U describe yourself and why?
[teachrose] good question
[mreporter]
American,, Mexican-American, in that order.

[RayRay] TTMA were badd ass back then....when the TRUE WINNERS won...como La Mafia...Mazz, David Marez, Latin Breed.
[FastEddie] mex/amer
[Greg_Tx] but it was always the same winners rayray
[mreporter]
Now if ask politics,..or muisc, or philosophy, you may get a different answer.

[RayRay] no que
[teachrose] would u say we are mex. american or vise versa
[mreporter]
TTMA was bad A** at one point....

[Luis] right m
[Tejano] ok, Pura Vida is gone, TTMA is still here, TEMA is starting....which org. do you feel is the best to represent Tejano music?
[RayRay] well....Selena and Emilio were the only "SAME" winners
[raul] Latino grammys, .........I think it is wrong. ......I'am hispanic but then are we going to have afro american grammys......or even whit grammys.
[mreporter]
Hmm. that is a tough call.....

[FastEddie] vise versa
[Greg_Tx] they do BET
[mreporter]
the best at this point,...is still...

[Greg_Tx] awards
[Luis] Latino is the bigger picture
[mreporter]
TMA......

[Greg_Tx] brb
[WebJefe] Ramiro why do you feel your book is important for ppl to have?
[RayRay] What do ya'll feel about JAY PEREZ not winning THE MALE VOCALIST this year.......and GAVE to a GUY that SING LIKE HE has a FROG stuck in his THROAT.
[mreporter]
Grego!!!
[mreporter]
don't go.
[mreporter]
yes...the book.....
[mreporter]
why important....many reasons..but

[mreporter]
....
[mreporter]
...This is the first time this music has ever been documented. It's important to remember that the artists in Tejano/Conjunto/Norteno have made important contributions to the American music landscape

[RayRay] does the book talk about the BIRTH of Tejano, and etc.
[mreporter]
.....and we have almost no books....

[FastEddie] amen
[mreporter]
on thesubect
[mreporter]
yes it does..

[V] how would U respond to someone who is or claims to be Tejano, and feels threatened by other types of music that have labels like conjunto, and norteno , and feel that those types of music will be the downfall of Tejano
[mreporter]
thebirth....the rots, the development, the struggles...the passion
[mreporter]
one Q at a time.....
[mreporter]
responded to someone...

[Luis] Why is your book different from Dr. Manuel Pena's
[mreporter]
each has their choice.....

[teachrose] is your book available at all book stores
[mreporter]
what they like or don't....
[mreporter]
how different.....

[RayRay] Can you compare it theBOOK TO THE VIDEO "SONGS FROM THE HOMELAND".......was the video a source to you writing the book.
[mreporter]
are you familair with Pena?

[Luis] yes
[mreporter]
available at Borders, Barnes and Noble. B Dalton, Walden...etc...

[Luis] He was the first
[RayRay] oopss.......too many questions huh??
[mreporter]
but I would recommend you call ahead to ensure they have it in stock.

[WebJefe] Do you think your book would be valuable in Mexico and other Latin American countries?
[mreporter]
To V.....I like variety...some people do not....

[V] is your book translated in Spanish for those markets?
[teachrose] can u repeat the name of book
[mreporter]
Mexico...yes......WHY?

[V] Latin American countries
[V] and other spanish speaking countries
[mreporter]
ye sit wil. it has so many heroes from Mexico....
[mreporter]
heroes from Texas,....
[mreporter]
the rio Grande Valley....
[mreporter]
Abel...give them the name while I get a cup of coffee....thanks

[Tejano] Ramiro: when can we expect a sequel to this book?
[mreporter]
ok.... "The Billboard Guide to Tejano and Regional Mexican Music," on Billboard Books. Available through Amazon.com!)
[mreporter]
whew.

[WebJefe] "Tejano and Regional Mexican Music"
[mreporter]
sequell...why a sequel??.
[mreporter]
Would you look for one?

[WebJefe] The Billboard Guide to "Tejano and Regional Mexican Music"
[Greg_Tx] just tejano
[mreporter]
by a show of ??? how many of you believe we need more books on Tejanos????

[RayRay] BRB
[Greg_Tx] ???
[mreporter]
yes????

[Luis] ???
[Tejano] why not? dont you think there is more information you can write about?
[FastEddie] yup
[V] I think we need more books on hispanics, mexicans, tejanos in general
[V] we should be using these in our schools as well
[Tejanamom] I agree, V
[mreporter]
I believe in that sincerely.....and truly feel,...

[V] to teach our children of our heritage as well as that of this country
[V] how do you feel about that?
[Tejanamom] I am going to purchase one for my classroom
[mreporter]
that the Tejano culture is deserving of many more books....BUT

[Tejanamom] and recommend the librarian order it as well
[mreporter]
this first one has to sell first......otherwise..
[mreporter]
publishers will not believe other books are viable..
[mreporter]
WHICH ARTISTS do you feel deserve their own bio books?

[Tejano] Ramiro: do you have an estimate of how many of your book have been sold?
[mreporter]
no estimate yet

[V] there are many latin writers, do you feel that they get a fair shake with book publishers?
[mreporter]
just starting
[mreporter]
air shake...hard to call..

[FastEddie] i belive hispainc radio stations could help
[Greg_Tx] brb
[mreporter]
what artists?? deserve their own??

[V] La Mafia
[Tejano] you have had book signing sessions in san antonio, houston, and i believe, dallas, do you have any plans to come to the Rio Grande Valley and do the same?
[V] Mazz probably
[mreporter]
by a show of *** vote for Emilio....

[V] because they all have such long histories in this music
[mreporter]
RGV coming later this month
[mreporter]
show of $$$$ vote for Mazz...
[mreporter]
show of &&& vote for Little Joe...
[mreporter]
WJ, can you tally???

[WebJefe] I'll try
[V] he only has ten fingers mreporter
[WebJefe] how about from 1 to 10 *'s
[V] lol
[Luis] &&&
[WebJefe] for Emilio: **********
[WebJefe] Mazz: **********
[FastEddie] laters
[V] cya FE
[Tejano] hmmm, i dont know that I would buy a book on a band/artist, but that is me. i will buy a book such as yours, i prefer to read a history of the music..
[WebJefe] oh, there you are. welcome back
[Luis] What happened to the book on Little Joe that Ramon H was right
[Angeleyz] hey jefe have you found who is all gonna be there tomorrow
[mreporter] ok

[WebJefe] sorry but the server. seems to be having problems today
[mreporter] ok.
[mreporter] ok

[V] mreporter, how do you feel about the lip synching issue, this has been on going since introducing tejano/mexicano music to the public in television and in award ceremonies and showcases, do you feel it cheapens or gives am amateur appearance to these events?
[mreporter]
where were we????

[WebJefe] Tejano's responds was good, here it is:
[mreporter]
lip synch is a cheat form on value...

[WebJefe]
[Tejano] hmmm, i dont know that I would buy a book on a band/artist, but that is me. i
[WebJefe] will buy a book such as yours, i prefer to read a history of the music..
[mreporter]
they say it is needed to present so many artists so quickly..

[teachrose] johnnies here
[mreporter]
but that is the same as saying they value quantity over quality

[Tejano] hector galan did a good job on songs from the homeland. do you feel that a book strictly on conjunto music would have an appeal?
[Luis] Tejano Dr pena wrote a book on conjuntos
[mreporter]
V......do you felel TTMA should advertise when they are producing a lip synch event? or how about ...
[mreporter]
a singing to backing DAT tracks event...did you go to TEMA?

[Luis] It is very good
[Tejano] ramiro: have you thought of tying in a single or double cd featuring a sampling of the music you wrote about?
[V] yes, I did
[V] but I didn't see the show
[mreporter]
TEMA had artists singign to backing tracks...it was funny....

[V] I was one of the few unfortunates that got stuck in the press room
[V] the prison
[mreporter]
they were NOT synchronized.

[WebJefe] lol, oh yeah
[WebJefe] oops
[WebJefe] someone kicked him out?
[V] what happened?
[mreporter]
Yes on Galan....yes on conjunto

[WebJefe] oh there he is
[V] oh, there he is
[Tejano] at least u were in the video media room. u should have been in the print media room :)
[V] I'm talking TEMA, was there more than one media room?
[WebJefe] that was at TTMA Tejano
[V] wasn't enough media for that
[Tejano] oh..oops
[Greg_Tx] Hey Ramiro, What do you think about he Intrnational explosion here in SA like Pasha, arjons, Observatory, Planeta Mex and other clubs bringing music here, what happened to the tejano clubs here?
[Tejano] still... :)
[mreporter]
ok...

[V] I think that it "cheapens" the event when they do any type of synching, cuz most ppl pay to see their artists perform live
[mreporter]
V.yes it does..
[mreporter]
ok

[V] the hosts should give some notice that the artists will be doing that
[mreporter]
They really should....otherwise
[mreporter]
they can call it false advertising.

[V] and it is in a sense, cuz they bill the events as live performances, and in many cases, they are not
[mreporter]
exactly........
[mreporter]
and people pay $$ based on so many acts which they think will be compeletly live...

[teachrose] reporter1 who are u
[mreporter]
anyone....have a idea...
[mreporter]
Ramiro Burr
[mreporter]
sorry, tech problm knocked me off to reconnect...

[teachrose] why did u change chat name
[Tejano] well, how many other shows do the same thing? grammys? do they lip sync? country music awards??
[mreporter]
tech problems...
[mreporter]
some do....most try to present an honest true performance..of all

[V] Ramiro, thousands upon thousands of ppl will read this script on La Onda Network, what would be the most important thing you would have to say to these people and why?
[V] besides, buy my book
[V] hehe
[mreporter]
but it is inevitabel that some shows will lip synch or sing to back tapes...
[mreporter]
OK
[mreporter]
whew.....

[WebJefe] mreporter, did you see V's last question?
[mreporter]
which one?

[V] V] Ramiro, thousands upon thousands of ppl will read this script on La Onda Network, what would be the
[V] most important thing you would have to say to these people and why?
[teachrose] more tech problems
[mreporter]
well...how about....
[mreporter]
why they should buy this book.......
[mreporter]
Because the history of a culture or of a country is incomplete unless it includes the participation and contributions of everyone. This book will help make complete the American music picture.

[WebJefe] yeah, why do you think your book is important to have?
[teachrose] can u share a little about the book
[mreporter]
Why...more???
[mreporter]
Why? Because the book is a source for fans seeking more information on their favorite groups, as well as a guide to other groups in the same sub-genre, or in the discovery of new groups
[mreporter]
Non-Latinos. Why? Typical non-Latinos may know what they like when they hear it but because of language or culture, are unable to identify it. This book is the definitive guide to who's who

sorry....tech problems..
[mreporter]
who else should get this book?????

[Greg_Tx] Why not a spanish edition?
[mreporter]
Spanish is coming......first steps first
[mreporter]
also...others?????

[V] do you think that your book will ever be popular with mainstream music lovers or will it strictly be sold within our culture?
[mreporter]
Trade associations - Billboard's and Univision Network's Latin Music Awards, the Grammys, Tejano Music Awards, Tejano Conjunto Festival, SXSW Music Conference, Houston Rodeo Committee. Why? Because they need a reliable source of information besides oral histories
[mreporter]
also for non latinos....

[Greg_Tx] SXSW is not fair wih tejano
[mreporter]
DJs?????
[mreporter]
Scholars?
[mreporter]
Corporate America?
[mreporter]
the leaders of this country....

[WebJefe] WebJefes?
[WebJefe] =:^)
[mreporter]
Music professors. Why? Because they want to study trends and developments in music, as well as study genres that have never been analyzed like rock, jazz or blues

[WebJefe] I've used this book several times already
[mreporter]
Ethnic, Mexican-American, Chicano studies professors. Why? Because the book is the first fact-based definitive reference source/historical account of non-mainstream music genres, written for laymen but also useful for scholars.

[V] is Tejano music fading? is it going to go the way of disco? or transform into some other type of music?
[mreporter]
can anyone answer this.......
[mreporter]
7. Is Tejano and conjunto American music or Mexican music?
[mreporter]
Tejano fading?? hmmm

[Luis] Any word on a tejano hall of frame to help what the book is trying to preserve
[V] why are all the younger artists so anxious to cross over?
[mreporter]
Tejano is like any other music genre that heated up expanded and coole doff...

[teachrose] i thought it was on the rise
[mreporter]
remember the disco fever? the urban cowboy phase?
[mreporter]
thegunre movement....the coutnry explosion with Brooks...
[mreporter]
all musics have their time...like fashion and trends

[teachrose] is mexico accepting the music
[mreporter]
does anyone still wear the clothes they thought was hip in high school when they were 16-17??
[mreporter]
Mexico?
[mreporter]
Yes.....but not all of it...
[mreporter]
Music does not crossover...artists do.

[Tejano] ramiro: now that u mentioned the GCAC Conjunto Festival, I feel that in recent years it has deviated from its roots, with Tejano music dominating the shows, where is santiago jimenez, eddie "lalo" torres, eva ybarra? los pinkys?? what do you think?
[mreporter]
All those names....have been there
[mreporter]
and each year,
[mreporter]
the officials bring others....

[teachrose] i think the music will be alrightr
[mreporter]
you can not always expect to see the same artists year after year...

[V] this is true
[mreporter]
Tejano will resurge....
[mreporter]
as it has in the last 45 years,...up and down....
[mreporter]
it is a uniquely american music form....
[mreporter]
as genuine, creative, dynamic, original..exciting...
[mreporter]
passionate, thriving...dynamic, vibrating..

[V] has it transformed in the last 45 years? if so, how and what are your predictions on the next 45 years?
[mreporter]
as any other, as urgent as american blues, rock or jazz...
[mreporter]
no predictions....on future pal....try a fortune teller..
[mreporter]
the book..., we looked at 700+ bands to come up with 300+ for the book. We looked at several critical factors but the most important were impact and influence.

[teachrose] do u think this could be a reason for the breakup on la mafia and mazz
[mreporter]
reason...what do you mean?

[teachrose] get out why u are on top
[V] I just read this on the Tejano journal, do you think the fans are a hindrance to the artists in some ways?
[V] Asking the staff about beer stations, they said those were all that MGM was allowed to put up, and some guy was caught urinating in the hall, so beer sales were stopped at midnite ....imagine what the TTMA officials had to answer to the people from the MGM. Tejano music fans need to organize themselves too and drink responsibly so that we can all have some good tejano fun...I think TTMA had to prove MGM management what good event they were br
[mreporter]
top???
[mreporter]
yes they did.....good for them...
[mreporter]
so why did tejano expode inthe 90s....
[mreporter]
you ask????
[mreporter]
The market exploded because of an unusual confluence of population growth and transformations, demographic trends in youth and culture, economic opportunity, market changes and luck and timing. The Tejano market, by the early 90's was already set for the explosion because the population numbers and youth interest were in place. The arrival of the major record labels made it possible to generate new exciting music, to distribute and promote it

[teachrose] more advertisement
[Tejano] one guy? that was all?? they were looking for an excuse, isnt this is the place where tailhook took place?
[V] lol Tejano
[V] I think U'r right
[mreporter]
ok..no more ads....more controversy???

[V] do you still feel that there is racism out there, and this is a major hurdle yet for latino/tejano musicians to jump?
[mreporter]
opinions?
[mreporter]
education?
[mreporter]
racism still exists....but should not be excuse to use blame game

[teachrose] agree
[mreporter]
orale...
[mreporter]
but let me put in one more plug....
[mreporter]
ok...on Chavalozz .what is the news?

[Tejano] hmm, opinions...ok, what about tejano trying to expand its horizons by doing songs in english, and by that, i mean, tejano sound kept intact, but, with english lyrics that more ppl can understand, to get it out into mainstream
[mreporter]
in my book, I mention how Tejano music, while celebrated for its commercial success, was also criticized as having ventured too far from its earthy folk roots into the pop field. Has it gone too far?
[mreporter]
TEJANO yes I agree with trying to expand....why is that importnt?
[mreporter]
anyone???
[teachrose] no
[mreporter]
because....every form of music needs to keep evolving in order to survive....

[Tejano] important? more sales for the artist, more gigs, more money
[mreporter]
if not. it becomes music for museums....

[Tejano] it is all about finances
[V] do you think that's possible tho? to expand Tejano music
[mreporter]
no...it is also about continuing to create...new ideas, new rhythms....
[mreporter]
why keep listening to the same songs from 10 years ago?

[teachrose] we should always try to expand our wings
[mreporter]
always possible...
[mreporter]
necessary

[Tejano] music is always in evolution dont you think?
[Tejano] especially tejano
[mreporter]
don't people grow as individuals?? needs change, ideas, opinions?
[mreporter]
do people still think in the 30s the same as when they are 15, or 20?
[mreporter]
yes...always

[WebJefe] ***** Get ready to get a chance to win a copy of Ramiro's book
