With stunning vocal talent and a mature outlook, Cecilia certainly doesn’t seem like a 13-year-old at first
glance. But as the title of her debut CD on Luxor Records reveals, she’s “Chiquita, Pero Picosa.” The
attractive young singer establishes herself as a fast-rising star on this CD’s fun mix of cumbias, rancheras, and
ballads. Even better, Pete Astudillo, one of the best in the business, produced the album and wrote five new
songs for it. Cecilia opened for him during the past year and he was impressed with her star potential.
Astudillo contributes hacking vocals on the title track, along with noted singer and actress Rebecca Valadez
(Janet Jackson tour, “Selena Forever” musical). Recorded at Gilbert Velazquez’s V. Music, other standout tracks
include cumbias “El Mucuacho de los Ojos Cafes” and “Quiero Bailar,” a cover of the Go-Go’s “We Got the
Beat.”
Cecilia’s friends and family first recognized her talent when she was 8, her family had rented a karaoke machine for an Easter party and when Cecilia got on the mike, everyone took notice. She had a great time and she “wanted to rent it so often, we bought it,” says her father Roy Estrada. Soon she was singing to pre-recorded tracks at charitable events and festivals. The reaction was so positive that the next logical step was to form a band, Some of the musicians had doubts about playing in a group where the lead singer was only 9. But when they heard her sing, they realized she was for real. Named “Los Reno Boys” in a sly reference to Los Gamblers, the band has accompanied Cecilia as she opened for artists like Samuray, Fama, La Diferenzia and Jay Perez. It’s obvious that Cecilia has a passion for singing, and that makes her concerts special. She enjoys joking around with the band and the audience and incorporating dance steps into her songs ... listen to her CD and see her live and you’ll see why when we say “Chiquita, Peru Picosa,” we mean it. Influences: Whitney Houston, Gloria EsteFan, Selena, Elida Reyna. |
