Eterno’s debut CD ‘Myth or Magic’ proves that Young Tejano is
brimming with ideas and creativity like never before. Equally split
between cumbias andrancheras, the album will satisfy fans of
Tejanos accordion-based roots. Plus, those who enjoy variety will appreciate the group’s versa-
tility and ability to bring pop stylings into the mix. And although the hand members range in
age from 18 to 23, they play like pros.
Legendary keyboardist and arranger Jerry de la Rosa (Mazz, Jay Perez) produced “Myth or
Magic,” which was recorded at Blue Cat Studios in San Antonio. Songwriters include 2000 TTMA
Male Vocalist of the YearJay Perez, who penned the fierce ranchera “Mi Canción” and sang back-
up on two songs, and Jorge Alejandro, composer of Michael Salgado’s “Otra Vez a la Cantina.”
The group also counts on songwriting talent from within, with vocalist Oscar David Hinojosa’s
cumbia “Se Acabó” getting incredible audience response.
Eterno was formed by high school friends from Benavides, Texas, in 1996. The band found
quick local acceptance and opened for La Mafia. Vocalist Jesse Marroquin left to pursue a solo
career in 1997, and Oscar David Hinojosa, the group’s good-natured percussionist, stepped
forward to take over vocal duties. The guys arrived at the name Elerno because their goal is for
the band, and its music, to be around for a very long time. Recent highlights include playing in
front of 25,000 fans at Tejano Fest 2 in Corpus Christi, and opening for Intocable.
On stage, Eterno is energetic and has a lot of fun, which helps the crowd enjoy itself too. The
group plays with far more maturity and tightness than most young groups. Its reputation for
dressing to impress doesn’t hurt, either.
The group’s goals include building on its Tejano success and crossing over into the Mexican
market. With great material, superb musical skills, and persistence through four years of touring,
rehearsing, and recording together, Eterno has all the elements needed to join Tejano’s next
generation of super groups.
