House of Blues Crowd Lands "Oscar" and La Mafia |
|
LOS ANGELES -The reigning kings of modern Tejano, two-time Grammy Award-winning La Mafia made its first foray into the club circuit here with a jam-packed Monday night appearance at the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd. "Here in Los Angeles on a star-filled night of Oscars, we offer you an Oscar of your own. Please welcome, the one and only, Oscar De la Rosa and La Mafia," declared KLAX 97.9 FM disc jockey Tomas Rubio by way of introduction. Appearing to be in exceptionally good spirits, the charismatic La Mafia frontman hit the stage in a coat and tie without his trademark leather bolero hat, suggesting that musical substance matters more than style within the glowing La Mafia repertoire. Offering pop stables such as "Estas Tocando Fuego (Your Playing with Fire)" and "Vida (Life)" alongside accordion-fueled Tejano-Nortenas well as cuts from their latest Grammy-winning CD, "En Tus Manos" the Houston-based band drew a capacity crowd. Kicking off with a blistering rock-tinged ballad, La Mafia also reached deep into its own early musical catalogue for a soul-stirring bilingual rendition of "Try Me," demonstrating how easily the band crosses genres while straddling two languages. For the many dancers present, La Mafia offered a round of particularly infectious pop-cumbias, with "Un Millon de Rosas" being a prime example of these irresistible hip-shaker tunes. From Latin pop-rock to conga-driven cumbia, La Mafia delivered it all, packing the House of Blues despite the abundance of Academy Award-related hoopla, crowds and congestion. |
