Island Jam 2000
Island Jam 2000, SPI, was one for the new millennium. With artists such as
Los Kumbia Kings, Bobby Pulido, Los Palominos, Jennifer y Los Jetz, Emilio y
Grupo Rio, Grupo Vida and many, many more. One would not go home
Amor y Pasion kicked off Good Friday's show. And if you've never seen this duo, this is one show you'll want to catch. Packed with vocals, beauty and high energy back up dancers, this band is a must see. Los Chavalozz were up next, with tropical shirts and shorts, just right for the beach. These guys are known as the "Young Guns of Tejano", and that they are. Jennifer Pena put on a spectacular show, and every song was a hit. This young singer is one of tejano music's best, but one must wonders if that butterfly tattoo is real or not?
Bobby Pulido, need I say more. This guy stole the show Friday night, even though there were some foul ups, like Bobby's microphone not being on the entire first song. Bobby told Johnny Canales, que "cagaron el palo", meaning they screwed up. Mr. And Mrs. Roberto Pulido, along with Alma Pulido, were enjoying a night at the beach with Bobby. And after the show, Bobby was gone, like the wind.
Saturday was even a better night for tejano music. La Costumbre started the show a little early, but I guess TC Network was just trying to cram all they could into one day, and what a day it was. Grupo Vida put on again, another one of their great, electrifying shows. With Art in shades and backwards hat, Sunny tearing up the squeeze box, and the noticeable cast on Jason's leg, which he broke at a performance in San Antonio. Elida y Avante followed with "Duele", TMA's song of the year, man can she stress those vocal cords on that song.
Emilio and Raulito Navaira, were doing the shuffle once again. Emilio played some old hits off of the Unsung Highways CD and some country, Raulito singing back up vocals and some rock. Emilio y Grupo Rio, have something for everyone. Several other acts followed, but the show of the night was the performance by Los Kumbia Kings. Dressed in orange wind pants and either white cut off t-shirts or jackets. If anyone that was there, did not have the Kumbia Kings CD, they will have it in the next few weeks. These guys are awesome, with music styles ranging from Hip-Hop, Jamaican and of course, cumbias, or as the spell it, Kumbias.
Happy the comedian was entertaining between sets both nights. And this is hell of a character, true roots, in his humor. From cellular phones standing in the unemployment line, calling long distance to t-shirts over bikinis.
All the shows were fantastic, even though "Media Access" was limited. We still got enough information to pass on to the public. All in all, Island Jam 2000 was a success. And if you ever go to Charlie's on South Padre Island, try the Cherry.
