I feel for La Mafia, the traveling is the hardest part. Going from airport to airport, waiting to connect, carrying instruments and esp the time change. I remember us running thru the airport like OJ trying not to miss our plane. Stefani had a few delays also on this trip. OH and was also chased by a bear. lol Its all worth it tho. The troops reallllyyy appriciate it, they treat you like royality there. Its GREAT getting to see how the other side of the world lives. Best of all they have AMERICAN food like McDonalds, Popeyes and Subway. La Mafia went as a Rock band and Stefani went as a TOP 40 band this time around. It would have been great to see that!! Elida leaves in about 7 weeks for her tour in Europe. We have 2 days off the whole 14 days while there. Nothing RED BULL cant handle.haha Elida and Frijoles will be doing a variety of Latin songs, of course they will do some of their own tunes also. Hopefully the record label will move on the DIVAS dvd, so that you guys can see exactly what the bands go thru and to see how much the troops really appriciate it. Hopefully the troops will be sent home to their families soon.

062204 last stage
Maria la Vandia : La Mujer in me….(last stage of her study)
(editor note; this is the last report que Maria will do. Starting next week she will be on special assignments only)
stage 6…
Hello again, well I guess you heard what has been happening around here. I don’t blame the staff and our sponsors on pressure we have been getting on my study.
Anyhow this last stage “ things el compadre like to do and hate”…..
Besides the all the bad comments we have gotten on our study we felt que we had to share this one with you.
Our last question given to 100 drunk vatos was, “things el compadre like to do”…we really worked hard trying to gather this info con estos drunks….but here are the results ;
1. attend social events:
53% love to go con la commadre to dances and other things.
29% hate them , never the less had to go con la commadre.
18% no way, I just go by myself.
2.attend family events con la comadre :
65% love to go con la commadre. 22% she hates them and she hates my family. 17% no way, I’ll just go by myself.
3.personnel feelings towards la commadre in public :
25% she really loves me and she shows it. 20% she really really loves me and doesn’t stop it.
15% I think she really, really, really loves me.
40% I really don’t care on how she feels about me, I do it by myself.
You see we couldn’t stop here, so we asked los vatos what did they really like doing and many said fishing. Where as la commadre hates fishing and especially the smell of shrimp. Another interesting thing we found out is que el compadre loves to dance, but hates to see la commadre show too to too much skin>>>> con that teenage dress she bought ?
Now commadre here is where you and I have to talk….can we talk….why in the world would you put on that red low top shot length dress you love to wear and make el compadre jealous….I know I know, but think about ? do you really think que el compadre is having fun while all those hounds are hummbering around your table to get a cheap look at you.…. while el poor compadre sitting there all mad and might just start a fight with un vato that looks too long….come on girl give el compadre a break….
I am sure que we don’t have to go that far back but remmer the times you were a kid and your parents took you with them… I am sure que your mother had some respect and dress accordingly, and not try to over do herself….why not us…lets be fair con el compadre and have fun con el….if you want to wear that kinky dress, shit do it at home con or sin underwear, now we are talking and having some real fun……
Its so easy for me MARIA LA VANDIA, which I am not real but the thoughts are, and I am sure que one day I will ask myself why am I that way con el compadre…..
I am MARIA LA VANDIA, AND in conclusion, I feel proud of what I am and going to be but must be able to share the good and the bad con el compadre….regardless of the price we all pay……..god bless you comadre…….

Barrio stock market report for 070706..
Once again here we and there you are, I am urbano yosabatodo from our command post in Kingsville texas. We have some real great news for many Americans in our hood. We will have gas masks made available to all barrio members in our hood for free. Yes this is one way of giving back to the hood. Anyhow now for that darn award winning barrio stock market report:
Los tamales:
Well its offical que los tamales in a can can be dangerous to your health. It was determined by two vatos y three commadres this passed weekend. We asked why in the world would they want to make tamales con tanto heat wave. Well long story short el compadre brought a can de tamales and wanted to compare them con el chingos de tarbajo que estos were doing. It wasn’t real funny when el compadre que the >>>> you know con esa pincha can. Los tamales ended the week at $5.00 a dozen.
Los taquitos:
Our hats off to those small barrio restaurants trying to keep above water. Eat out pero close to home e.t. los ttaquitos ended the week at $1.10 a taco.
Las empanadas:
This market has suffered the most this first quarter of this 2006 year . with the treat of la empanada war of 2006. with the establishment other folks wanting to cash in from across the tracks and the fiasco at the mall this passed may. Las empanadas have more filling and are lower on price. Las empanas ended the week at $.35 each.
Las tortillas:
We have really have no national news on flour this week con tanto peda we were not able to do too much research. Pero do realize que they don’t stick anymore… las tortillas ended the week at $1.20 a pack. A footnote; we feel que esto are trying to raise the price during the holidays, what do you think…
La barbacoa de cabeza:
Well the law dogs are doing some real serious investigating con the crime of the week. Some how or somewhere more than 100 llamas were missing and has delayed the opening of this fine meat. La barbacoa de cabeza ended the week at $6.50 a lb.
Cheap beer:
This week we are going back to our cheap beer report because we didn’t have time to do research. Cheap beer ended the week at $3.65 a six pack.
Well there you have it for this week its been a long week, and we plan to be back full impack real soon.

" USO Tour to Kosovo
Category: Travel and Places
Well we almost made it to Europe today. It has been a long day. We started our journey with an interview with "El Gordo Y La Flaca" who sent a crew to meet us at the airport to see us off. We were delayed in Houston with bad weather for about 3 hours. We were re-routed to connect in Washington DC to fly to Munich Germany to Vienna to Pristina and then drive 2 hours to Kosovo. We didn't make our connection in Washington and after a few hours, our USO director decided to have us spend the night in Washington. We are flying out tomorrow , bur this time we are flying to Frankfurt Germany to Instabul Turkey (thats nuts huh) to Pristina and then we are driving to Kosovo. The sad thing is that we were supposed to visit some of our troups at the Hospital which we won't make. Well I better get to bed....we have another long day ahead of us....everyone is excited about our stop in Instabul Turkey...that was an unexpected change....I'll try and get some pics up soon...peace...Mando"

Diamantina Martinez
GALVESTON - Diamantina Martinez, 80, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2006, at her residence in Galveston, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 7, 2006, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Galveston, with Fr. John Paul Flajole, O.F.M., as Celebrant. Burial will follow services Friday at Calvary Cemetery also in Galveston. A Rosary Service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 6, 2006, also at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Mrs. Martinez’s family will be receiving friends for visitation at the church Thursday evening from 5 p.m. until service time.
Diamantina was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on August 10, 1925, however, she has been a longtime island resident for most of her life. She and her husband, Theodore Ruben Martinez owned and operated, for many years, the “El Nopalito Restaurant” at 42nd Street here on Galveston Island. She was well known for her very large and giving heart. A person so generous that she would extend her professional and personal hospitality to those in need. Mrs. Martinez was always willing to provide her wonderful Mexican Cuisine to the families grieving the loss of their loved ones. It was her kind and caring ways for which she will be remembered.
Mrs. Martinez was a contributing member of the Damas of our Lady of Guadalupe Organization at St. Patrick Parish for 40 plus years. Her membership began at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish and continued at St. Patrick when the parishes were consolidated. Her devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe was evident in her many contributions that she so willingly made throughout the community. Her generosity to this organization earned her a place of honor and respect. Any event sponsored by “the Damas” would have included a contribution from “Diama” as she was affectionately known. Mrs. Martinez truly spread her love of neighbors without limits or recompense.
Mrs. Martinez is preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Ruben Martinez and also two of her children, Isabel Rebecca Martinez and Theodore Ruben Martinez, Jr. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Louis Paiz Vasquez and Modesta Perez Vasquez, several of her sisters, Gloria Vargas, Minerva Delesma, Bertha Saenz and Lupe Quiroga and one of her brothers, Richard “Sonny” Vasquez. She leaves behind her loving family, her two sons, Johnny Martinez and Roland Martinez, both of Galveston, Texas and her loving grandchildren, Helen Rebecca Martinez, Taylor Martinez, Stephanie Martinez, Jason Martinez, Roland Martinez, Jr., Jonathon Martinez, Monica Martinez and Michael DeLeon and also her great-grandchildren, Marcus Martinez and Alexis Sandoval. Mrs. Martinez is also survived by her sister, Mary Vargas of Galveston, Texas and her two brothers, Louie Vasquez and wife, Alice of Galveston, Texas and Alex Vargas of Houston, Texas, nieces and nephews, a host of other loving family and many friends.
Pallbearers will be Jonathon Martinez, Jason Martinez, Roland Martinez, Jr., Jimmy Molina, Jr., Bennie Vargas and Gustavo Mireles. Honorary pallbearers will be Louis Vasquez, Albert Acosta, Paul Martinez, Rene Romero, Adan Hippolito, Emilio Calderon, Robert Copado, Richard Rainosek, Roy Ramos, Pete Dunequez, Floyd Simmons, Rudy Flores, Val Flores, Juan A. Garza and Jimmy Molina.
Mrs. Martinez’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all her family and many friends who were always there when needed or called upon. Most especially, many loving thanks to her niece, Cindy Vargas, who, so graciously gave of her time and devoted attention to our mother. All of you will be remembered for your kind and loving ways.
For those who wish, condolences may be sent to family at the following websites: tejanoentertain.net, bnetradio.com, tejanonotes.com, aguilaonline.com, tejanomike.com, tejanojournal.com, and mega 101.

Thank You, BANDERAS.
I really enjoy sharing legitimate, and fruitful discussions with reasonable, honest persons, such as yourself. Radio stations do indeed must "serve the public interest". I have said this many times, to many people.
The majority of the public ultimately has the last word, and I hope that the majority of the people prefer Tejano, for you sake. I would remind you that NOT ONLY TEJANOS are all about inclusiveness. Many genres share this common bond, and that is where my heart lives. I like what the public likes. Not because we were born here, or there, or anywhere. Good Music is the international language of love.
THE PUBLIC in any given area makes the decision, and that is a true reflection of radio programming. That's why there are many, many, many radio stations in every town. So that all large segments of the population can have thier interests served by radio. In the event that any radio station does not serve the majority of the public interest, then, you are correct in your assesment of the consequences. I hope that all demographics are served and happy. I hope to work with you again, soon! Got any gigs? Need a good MC? LOL. Fair prices.

Ondaman, more power to the station in San Angelo! I'm not against it, bro. If their goal is to play what the community wants I will support them for doing that. That's how it's suppose to be, right?
Although, the only spanish music I listen to is Tejano/Chicano :(, and when I'm not listening to that I listen to R&B, Oldies, Blues, Rock & Country. So I'm very diverse in my own way. I wish I could be diverse in all kinds of Mexican music but I'm not. I was raised on Motown and grew to love Chicano music by choice.

Albert,
Yeah, I do remember you from the gig at the Red Berry Mansion. And also from the New Year's Eve gig that we played at downtown SA last year. I recall enjoying the stories you shared from back in the day when you were part of the Tejano genre.
Of course the name of my band, BANDERAS, does mean more than just one flag. But you may not know that it even means more than just two flags. It's about being all inclusive. Yes, ALL inclusive! That's why we chose to be a Tejano band. Because tejanos LOVE variety in music, tejanos LOVE variety at dances, and in life.
Now this is exactly what the radio station in San Angelo has done; include Tejano music into its format. That's called being inclusive (variety). No radio station owns their operating frequency. They merely have a license granted from the FCC. But that radio station is legally obligated to play the format that is representative of the majority demographic. Failure to do such can actually get their license revoked. But I know you already know this.
Nobody knows more about being diverse and tolerant than Tejanos. Since we do live in a multicultural country. But Mexicanos, Japanese, Koreans, etc, etc are not used to dealing with multicultural diversity on our scale as their respective countries are pretty much of one race. This, I believe, is the culture SHOCK that Mexicanos experience when they do arrive in the US and perhaps why they are unwilling to accept Tejano into their world.

Right now with the current radio situation it's refreshing to hear what the station in San Angelo is doing. Like one of the workers said. This new format es para la comunidad latina no para los Mexicanos exclusivamente. Now that's what I'm talking about. I'd rather hear a part-time Tejano station rather than no Tejano at all!!!

Hey, OndaMan! You go, boy. Proud of you, son. Just lower the "low class" stuff. Help them elevate themselves, not the other way around. See what I mean?
They step up, you don't step down. Ok?
And to "Banderas". I think I might be wrong, but are you the band from San Antonio, that played at the "Big Wedding", last October at the Berry Mansion? I was the MC. Is that you? LOL. I hope so. Anyway, if it is you, your name "Banderas"...does it have a meaning? Like more than one "flag"? I hope so, again. We are strengthened by our diversity, and weakened by our narrow-mindedness. See what I mean? Variety is the spice of life, and-- although I respect those who only like one kind of music, or 99 percent in favor of a monotonous ideal--I know that in our multicultural society, a well-balanced array of music and flavor is the most appealing and satisfying course for the vast majority.
Wave all your flags, sing all your songs, play all your instruments, in HARMONY, always in perfect harmony, hermanos y hermanas!
Love,
Albert

Ondaman, I was just talking from the experience we had here in Midland/Odessa. We did the same thing here sometime ago, requesting Tejano by calling and sending emails but their audience started complaining just like they're complaining in San Angelo. It's not like it used to be back in the day. The majority of Tejanos don't listen to Norteno and the majority of Nortenos don't listen to Tejano. But like I said, I can't tune in to a Mexican station in hopes that a Tejano song will play while I'm in the car. I'd rather have my cd playing without having to wait. Plus I'm not one to settle for less.
My hopes are very high that Tejano will be back in the airwaves everywhere soon so I'm not surrendering what so ever.
Take it easy brotha!! Good discussion.

No no no RayRay. That's a big no no. I am willing to hear Tejano music part-time rather than no Tejano at all. It's easy for us to say I'd rather hear my CD's. Artists rely on radio airplay too. If we let pride take over we will lose the little we got left as far as Tejano being played on radio. Back in the day Tejano was played alongside with Mexican music, but then the division started. Tejanos got to proud and thought were better than the mojos and vice versa. Los Mexicanos started feeling inferior and below us Chicanos so now they adopted an air of arrogance themselves and are always on the defensive. My dad, as a 100% Chicano, recalls when los Mexicanos would come here and they'd all get along from the start. They'd all jam out to the same radio station which were catering to both and each other embraced each other's music. To say that the station will go downhill because of Tejano and Norteño being played together is the same attitude them Mexicanos are giving about Tejano being played alongside their music. Somebody in that board said that those thought were like when Hitler wanted a pure white race because a world with different races together wasn't any good. To me it's like segragation. Don't get me wrong, there's a few Mexicanos in there that don't mind the variety as I have read there posts. Also, I admire all nuestra raza Chicana/Tejano who is posting in there postiviely and willing to compromise. I know one of the DJ's there very good and he sent me a few of their shows and they are kicking a$$ as far as Tejano music goes. I feel it's gonna work. This is one of the first stations doing something unique. Besides, to us Tejano is a unique American art form, but it still does have Mexican influences also. If it where 100% American Tejanos wouldn't record rancheras for example. It also wouldn't be sung in spanish. I don't consider it music from Mexico, but I do consider it Mexican-American music made in the good ol' USA. RayRay don't lose hope carnal.
" So, to me it's a lost cause!" Those are surrendering words carnal.
No way, I will keep the Tejano flag flying high and mighty. Even if Tejano has to be heard alongside Norteño music.

Ondaman, in my opinion, a "Norteno" station shouldn't have to play Tejano music at all, unless they have a block time for just Tejano. The reason I say that is because I personally don't listen to "Norteno", so why am I going to tune in just to wait until they play a Tejano song? I'm better off listening to my CDs. Just like Country, Jazz, Blues, Classical and many others are made to be a stand alone genre. A Norteno station plays a variety of Mexican music because the Mexicans will listen to it, but as you and everyone else knows, Tejano is not considered to be a part of Mexico or any other Latin country. It's considered American. So, to me it's a lost cause!

Diamantina Martinez
DIAMANTINA MARTINEZ
Diamantina Martinez, 80, passed away Saturday, July 1 2006 at her residence in Galveston, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 7, 2006, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Galveston, with Fr. John Paul Flajole, O.F.M., as Celebrant. Burial will follow services Friday at Calvary Cemetery also in Galveston. A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 6, 2006, also at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Mrs. Martinezs family will be receiving friends for visitation at the church Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until service time.
Diamantina was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on August 10, 1925, however, she has been a longtime island resident for most of her life. She and her husband, Theordore Ruben Martinez owned and operated, for many years, the El Nopalito Restaurant at 42nd Street here on Galveston Island.
Any even sponsored by the Damas would have included a contribution from Diama as she was affectionately known. Mrs. Martinez truly spread her love of neighbor without limits or recompense.
Mrs. Martinez is preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Ruben Martinez and also two of her children, Isabel Rebecca Martinez and Theodore Ruben Martinez, Jr.. She leaves behind her loving family, her two sons, Johnny Martinez and Roland Martinez, both of Galveston, TX and her loving grandchildren, Helen Rebecca Martinez, Taylor Martinez, Stephanie Martinez, Jason Martinez, Roland Martinez, Jr., Jonathon Martinez, Monica Martinez and Michael DeLeon and also her great-grandchild, Marcus Martinez. Mrs. Martinez is also survived by her sister, Mary Vargas of Galveston, TX and her two brothers, Louie Vasquez and wife, Alice of Galveston, TX and Alex Vargas of Houston, TX, nieces and nephews, a host of other loving family and many friends.
Pallbearers will be Jonathon Martinez, Jason Martinez, Roland Martinez, Jr., Jimmy Molina, Jr., Bennie Vargas and Gustavo Mireles. Honorary Pallbearers will be Louis Vasquez, Albert Acosta, Paul Martinez, Rene Romero, Adon Hippolito and Emilio Calderon.Robert Copado,Roy Ramos,Floyd Simmons,Juan Garza,Val Flores,Rudy Flores,Louis Hernandez,Pete Duneguez,Richard Rainosek
Mrs. Martinezs family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all her family and many friends who were always their when needed or called upon.
